Secure Your Browsing Session Before Hitting Starbucks

Starting today, Starbucks offers free Wi-Fi across US and Canadian cities. Free Wi-Fi hotspots have become a common method for connecting to the internet and sharing information, often private information.

Such hotspots attract the unwanted attention of hackers and others who are interested in capturing the information being shared on the hotspot.

Hackers use something called packet sniffers that if configured, captures each data packet that passes through the network. The captured packets are then decoded and analyzed to read the content they are carrying.

Turn your old router into a WiFi repeater

Our [LifeHacker] suggestion is to install the open-source DD-WRT firmware on your router and turn it into a repeater for your main router, expanding your Wi-Fi signal to reach every nook and cranny of your house, and even into your backyard or garage, if needed. You’ll be able to use the same password and security scheme, you won’t need anything except a power outlet for the repeater when you’re done, and most of your devices will automatically switch between the two signals when needed.

Starbucks Finally will offer free WiFi

Starting July 1, Starbucks will let anyone connect to its WiFi network for free. This fall, the company will add a content network called Starbucks Digital Network, in partnership with Yahoo and other sites, which will include local content you won’t be able to read anywhere else. Both offerings will be free.

Took them long enough.
