Organize your desktop with Fences

Fences is a one-of-a-kind program, allowing you to draw labeled shaded areas on your desktop, which become movable & resizable containers for your desktop icons. These groups can help bring organization and consistency to your computer's desktop, solving the "constant mess" problem that has plagued the desktop since its inception.

This is something I have struggled with, how to organize something that offers very little help in doing so. I create folders, but then I can't see whats in them easily. I move things to different areas of my desktop, but then switching video sources and all that is undone. Fences is perfect for someone like me who likes things neat and organized.

Since its in beta I have been testing in in a Virtual PC and so far see no reason not to adapt oit on my laptop.

Skype call recorder

This is a free Skype recording program which automatically recorders all your Skype conversations and conferences. It saves Skype conversations in compact and widely used format - mp3 files. This tool records P2P Skype calls, SkypeOut calls, as well as calls to Skype Online number . This program seats in the system tray and monitors skype calls and start the recording automatically when you start conversation. It can record several simultaneous calls (eg. one active while others on hold) in separate files for easy and convenient access. Very simple interface requires virtually no tuning or setup. Just install it, allow access to the Skype client and that's it.

I just started using Skype to help reduce the minutes used on my cell phone. The calls are clear, no lagging, very cheap and its dead easy to get up and running. This software seems like a good utility to have when those situations popup and you want to record the call.

Photoshop Express (Online version of Photoshop) in Beta

This is the main interface of the online version of Adobe Photoshop called Photoshop Express. Once you have uploaded an image, through the My Gallery manager, you can access and modify your images. What Adobe has done is make this as dead simple as possible. Nothing too complex, but still pretty powerful.

The menu of options seems limiting at first but when you get into modifying your image you will see it covers pretty much everything need to do (at least for the person using an online version of Photoshop). What they have done that is very cool is when you apply or use one of the menu items it becomes checked and that option is applied. You can simply uncheck the item to see your original image.

Everything is done through an AJAX, interactive, interface which means things are done without having to refresh or reload pages.

I changed the color of the corvette in the image with two clicks: select Pop Color from the menu and then select one of the preset choices.

Did I mention all menu items, when selected, give you 6 or 7 choices to try so you don't have to worry about figuring out what the settings should be.

Navicat does what few applications do

Navicat logo
And that is to switch me 100% away from an application I have used for years.

Navicat is a powerful MySQL database administration and development tool that is not only sophisticated enough for professional developers, but also easy to learn for new users.

I did a post a few weeks back about some top tools for managing a MySQL database. From that post Navicat contacted my and offered me a free license to fully take advantage of their software. Usually I am weary about this but wanted to give it a try since a top developer I know that is in charge of DonationCoder.com also uses it. Why not give it a chance and use it for week to see if I like it - basically stop using the MySQL provided tools.

Screenshot of Navicat
So glad I did as Navicat is an awesome application that is very well designed from a UI standpoint and provides all the functionality that one could need from a MySQL manager. So much better having all the features in a single interface instead of spreading them across several tools like MySQL Tools does.

Quick Highlights:
  • Ability to drag and drop tables detween databases
  • Ability to copy field(s) in a table design view and paste the fields into another table table design view. Makes copying part of a table definition easy
  • Import wizard is very well designed and logical in its use and flow.
Wishes:
  • Query Editor. I like typing in queries and it would be nice if the Query Editor either provided intellisense as I typed a table/field name or let me drag and drop table/field names into the Query Editor without navigating back to the Query Builder window.
  • Quick SQL selection: Basically allow me to select a table and press one button (or right-click menu selection) to generate an INSERT, SELECT, UPDATE and other SQL statements. Provide options of how the SQL statement is constructed: SQL statement on a single line, Lines based on SQL commands, or Seperate lines for each item.

Helix is a customized distribution of the Knoppix Live Linux CD. Helix is more than just a bootable live CD. You can still boot into a customized Linux environment that includes customized linux kernels, excellent hardware detection and many applications dedicated to Incident Response and Forensics.

Helix has been modified very carefully to NOT touch the host computer in any way and it is forensically sound. Helix wil not auto mount swap space, or auto mount any attached devices. Helix also has a special Windows autorun side for Incident Response and Forensics.

Top 5 free tools to destroy your hard drive's data

Remove evidence or just remove information before giving away or trashing an old computer. You would be surprised at what can be recovered from your hard drive if the proper steps aren't taken to permanently erase the data. So, here's a few tools to help you destroy your data.

Darik's Boot and Nuke
- A self-contained boot floppy (can be a bootable CD) that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction. I just got done using this application on an old laptop.

Eraser - Eraser is a secure data removal tool, which allows you to remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it with carefully selected patterns.

Secure Delete - Secure Delete allows you to specify a directory (and optionally all subdirectories) in which all files should be deleted. When each file is deleted the contents of the file are filled with random data prior to deleting the file.

Wipe [linux] - Wipe is a secure file wiping utility and listed by some as one of the best utilities for securely removing data from a hard drive.

Active KillDisk - A powerful and compact software that allows you to destroy all data on hard and floppy drives completely, excluding any possibility of future recovery of deleted files and folders. It's a hard drive and partition eraser utility.

stay tuned for a tool to get data from an erased hard drive...

Network Monitor 3 One Click Capture Tool

Wish you could get a network capture from a computer with no capture software installed? Wish you could have a network traffic "flight recorder" on a USB key? Here's your answer!"

The motivation behind creating this tool was to provide an extremely simple way to get a trace from an end user. And the name says it all, though maybe a small bit of false advertisement as it may take a bit more than just one click :). Once you have it downloaded to your machine, you can launch the executable and it will lead you through some simple dialogs that install the tool and start a trace. Once the trace is complete, which means it was manually stopped by the user or the default time of 2 hours have passed, a window will be opened to the location for the capture, called OneClick.cap.

Software I have been reviewing lately

Just a quick post of software I have been using for testing and possible inclusion into my software arsenal.
  • Navicat: a MySQL Database Manager. So far I like that all functionality is in a single location rather than loading seperate applications, like with the tools from MySQL.
  • Vista Buttons: A web menu creator that creates Vista styled menus for websites. So far, its not bad. Trying to figure out if I like the usability of the application - so far I'm on the fence.
  • Free Monitor for Google: This tool will determine the search engine result placement for groups of keywords. So far, its fast, easy to use and the reporting is easy to follow.
That's it for now

New WebRunner Browser by Mozilla

Mozilla cutout all of the frills to give people a one site at a time browsing experience that doesn’t even have an Address Bar, bookmarks, forward/back operations, or many other things that you have become accustomed to a browser having.

At first I thought why. Why would you need a single window that can view only one website at a time with no way to type a new website in. Then they mention web2.0 apps. What a great idea for a quick kiosk application. Web2.0 apps are taking on desktop applications in every area and a simple webbrowser is just the ticket for better simulating a desktop application with a web app.

Always Be Releasing (ABR) approach to software development

Something I have been noticing with software development and the software's user base is that more and more users expect software to be in a constant release mode (which I call Always-Be-Releasing approach). That is, they really don't like the older, more traditional methods (very much like what Microsoft does) where a version is released and any fixes are passed down through patches with new version coming every year or more. It appears that the software release approach used by Open Source where the developers are constantly and consistently releasing new versions (even if its just a dev/snapshot build) is a much more desirable, and in some ways, an expected approach.

If you were to release updates to your application(s) on a daily/weekly basis, even with just minor changes, your users will think the application is always being worked and gain a level of confidence that is hard to come by now. There are just too many dead-applications cluttering the software database websites, the search engines and the software review websites. Users want to make sure the time they invest in learning an application is not going to waste.

The days of a software title release every year or 6 months just doesn't cut it anymore and only upsets your users. Stay in an Always-Be-Releasing state and you will find you users are much happier, contribute more with suggestions and develop a stronger loyalty to your company and software.

Thoughts, leave a comment...

CCleaner v2.0

CCleaner has released v2.0 of its very popular system cleanup tool. Better and faster is what they claim. I installed it and so far so good.

Whats New:
  • Complete rebuild in C++
With the requirements for a portable version, 64-bit compatibility and Windows Vista increasing against the limitations of the old architecture. We decided to rebuild the entire CCleaner application in highly optimized C++.
  • Faster analyzing and cleaning
Each scanning process was rewritten from scratch and fully optimized. The result being a noticeable speed increase in all areas.
  • Portable
CCleaner can now run from a USB thumbdrive and be installed/run on a computer without a complicated setup process.
  • Compact
The rewrite removed all external file dependencies, so the main EXE is now half the size of the original program and support files.
  • Redesigned User Interface
The original CCleaner user interface was looking a little dated, so the GUI was redesigned with a modern look, but without sacrificing speed or usability. New icons were created for the interface and the main program icon was updated with a more modern style.
  • Exclusions
It is now possible to specify files, folders and registry keys to ignore from the cleaning process.
  • Loads of little tweaks
Too numerous to mention them all separately, we've tried to improve CCleaner in all areas.

EDraw Flowchart

To create flowcharts, organizational charts, and other diagrams for business and technical processes rapidly, designing does not need to start from scratch. Abundant flowchart templates, symbols and samples provided along with the software will help to quickly create new flow diagrams. Numerous colors, fonts, shapes, styles, and symbols for each object of the flowchart are usually available to create ones own template that can be saved for future use.

After much looking and evaluating other flowchart software I came to the conclusion that this application is by far the easiest to work with. I read no help file and was creating flowcharts in a matter of minutes. The interface is clean and setup pretty well. All in all, for the $49 price tag, I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone looking for a solid flowcharting application.

Process Explorer for Windows v11.0

Ever wondered which program has a particular file or directory open? Now you can find out. Process Explorer shows you information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded.

The Process Explorer display consists of two sub-windows. The top window always shows a list of the currently active processes, including the names of their owning accounts, whereas the information displayed in the bottom window depends on the mode that Process Explorer is in: if it is in handle mode you'll see the handles that the process selected in the top window has opened; if Process Explorer is in DLL mode you'll see the DLLs and memory-mapped files that the process has loaded. Process Explorer also has a powerful search capability that will quickly show you which processes have particular handles opened or DLLs loaded.

Scriptomatic 2.0

A completely new version of the famous Scriptomatic, the utility that writes WMI scripts for you. (And, in the process, teaches you the fundamental concepts behind writing WMI scripts for yourself.) Unlike its predecessor, Scriptomatic 2.0 isn’t limited to writing just VBScript scripts; instead, Scriptomatic 2.0 can write scripts in Perl, Python, or JScript as well. In addition, Scriptomatic 2.0 gives you a host of new output formats to use when running scripts, including saving data as plain-text, as a stand-alone Web page, or even as XML. Scriptomatic 2.0 handles arrays, it converts dates to a more readable format, and it works with all the WMI classes on your computer; on top of all that, it also writes scripts that can be run against multiple machines.

How To: Bulletproof Server Backups with Amazon S3

We all know that it is important to keep recent backups of anything you value at all, so why not automate the process? Until I started tinkering with S3, my server backup process involved manually downloading and compressing the contents of my server and storing the compressed file on my hard drive. That usually took longer than I’d like so I wouldn’t do it terribly often. The main benefit of backing up with S3 is that you take advantage to your server’s high-speed connection and bypass the need to download files over your connection, as well as safely store files somewhere other than your own server.

GIMP’s major UI revamp

GIMP is well known as a powerful application, and especially in the last few years has gained a rather large community of users. There’s also a large group of people for whom GIMP would be their tool of choice, if it had the same kind of attention to user interface as Inkscape, GNOME, Firefox and other modern Open Source apps.

Speed up your internet connection

The TCP Optimizer is a free, easy Windows program that provides an intuitive interface for tuning and optimizing your Internet connection. There is no installation required, just download and run.

I have it used it to tweak my settings but its hard to tell how much, if any, its speed up my internet connection. Check it out and leave a comment if you noticed much of a difference. Also, you can use one of the many connection speed tests to check just how fast your connection is.

Adobe PDF Reader OUT, Foxit IN

Man am I glad to finally dump Adobe PDF Reader. The straw that broke the camels , besides the 110Meg+ install, was the constant and annoying updater. In comes Foxit reader to the rescue with its very small under 2Meg install and fast opening of PDF files.

Run don't walk and remove Adobe's bloatware and grab Foxit.
