Free Windows System Explorer

Keeping tabs on my machine is something I’ve done for as long as I can remember. I like watching the performance of my applications, monitoring network connections, and all of that stuff most people would never think twice about. One of the most popular utilities for doing this is the Process Explorer that is put out by Microsoft, but there’s another free app that I really love called System Explorer.

This is one application worth checking out...

File Management and Organization Tools and Ideas

Managing the files and reference materials that you’ve compiled over the course of a project (or even your entire career) can be a daunting task. You need to organize invoices, proposals, creative files, mock-ups, research sources and a myriad of other folders and files for later reference. And let’s face it: most operating systems have inadequate file management tools for power users.

Below are a number of apps and resources that you can use to manage your files and resources. Some are Web-based, some desktop-based and some are analog (i.e. paper-and-pen-based). The one that’s right for you will depend largely on your workflow and what you need to keep organized.

Decent list, with some tools that I have never heard of that seem to be worth investigating a bit further.

Symantec launches Norton Security 10 and Quorum technology

With ID theft reaching increasingly alarming proportions, Symantec this week rolled out a battery of new tools geared to helping PC users fight victimization, at a press event Wednesday in New York City.

The company's latest round of heavy artillery includes new Quorum technology, integrated into the now available Norton Internet Security 10 and Norton Antivirus 10, plus a free tool known as the Norton Online Risk Calculator.

Does anyone still use Norton? I stopped using them many years ago because they are just way to much of a resource hog. Have they got any better?

Personally I use AVG for antivirus and Comodo for a firewall.

Windows Debugger, Disassembler, Code Analyzers

The three PEBrowse programs share large amounts of code, but perform distinct activities. PEBrowse Professional, the static analyzer and eldest, allows you to examine any Windows Portable Executable file (including system drivers) offline and not in the middle of some debugging session. That domain is reserved for the PEBrowse Professional Interactive debugger, which contains most (but not all) of features found in the PeBrowse Professional disassembler but brings powerful additions to the analysis and debugging of an active program. The latest addition to the PEBrowse family, PEBrowse Crash-Dump Analyzer, in many ways acts and feels like the debugger, but instead of a live target examines information collected in a mini-dump or crash-dump file from a dead process.

Five Best Disk Defragmenters

For those of you unfamiliar with the problem of file fragmentation, a quick—and quite simplified—primer is in order. Files are stored on a hard drive in blocks of data. The larger the file, the larger the number of blocks it is composed of. As your operating system accesses files, moves files around, and so on data blocks are not always arranged in the most effective manner. Imagine it like a messy office where as you opened file folders from your file cabinet you frequently placed documents from inside all over the room. You have a great memory, and you can find all the pages from each folder again if you need to, but you waste a lot of time just moving around looking for them.

Organize your desktop with Fences

Fences is a one-of-a-kind program, allowing you to draw labeled shaded areas on your desktop, which become movable & resizable containers for your desktop icons. These groups can help bring organization and consistency to your computer's desktop, solving the "constant mess" problem that has plagued the desktop since its inception.

This is something I have struggled with, how to organize something that offers very little help in doing so. I create folders, but then I can't see whats in them easily. I move things to different areas of my desktop, but then switching video sources and all that is undone. Fences is perfect for someone like me who likes things neat and organized.

Since its in beta I have been testing in in a Virtual PC and so far see no reason not to adapt oit on my laptop.

Skype call recorder

This is a free Skype recording program which automatically recorders all your Skype conversations and conferences. It saves Skype conversations in compact and widely used format - mp3 files. This tool records P2P Skype calls, SkypeOut calls, as well as calls to Skype Online number . This program seats in the system tray and monitors skype calls and start the recording automatically when you start conversation. It can record several simultaneous calls (eg. one active while others on hold) in separate files for easy and convenient access. Very simple interface requires virtually no tuning or setup. Just install it, allow access to the Skype client and that's it.

I just started using Skype to help reduce the minutes used on my cell phone. The calls are clear, no lagging, very cheap and its dead easy to get up and running. This software seems like a good utility to have when those situations popup and you want to record the call.

Even though I'm not much into Linux I can still appreciate the level of software he is recommending.

Check this resource out, and be sure to bookmark it.

Windows Update thought I was running a Mac

I got the above error message (This website is designed to work with Microsoft Windows operating systems only) when trying to run Windows Update. A Mac, really?. To fix the issue, and get Windows Update working again I deleted the following two registry keys:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent]

Once deleted, I rebooted the computer and all was working again.

Microsoft's Search 4.0 for desktops

No, it's not WinFS, the file system that was supposed to revolutionize the way files and documents are stored in Windows. But if it gives users tools that accomplish the same things WinFS was supposed to provide, does Search 4.0 come close?

Photoshop Express (Online version of Photoshop) in Beta

This is the main interface of the online version of Adobe Photoshop called Photoshop Express. Once you have uploaded an image, through the My Gallery manager, you can access and modify your images. What Adobe has done is make this as dead simple as possible. Nothing too complex, but still pretty powerful.

The menu of options seems limiting at first but when you get into modifying your image you will see it covers pretty much everything need to do (at least for the person using an online version of Photoshop). What they have done that is very cool is when you apply or use one of the menu items it becomes checked and that option is applied. You can simply uncheck the item to see your original image.

Everything is done through an AJAX, interactive, interface which means things are done without having to refresh or reload pages.

I changed the color of the corvette in the image with two clicks: select Pop Color from the menu and then select one of the preset choices.

Did I mention all menu items, when selected, give you 6 or 7 choices to try so you don't have to worry about figuring out what the settings should be.
