Detailed System Information with Speccy

Speccy is an advanced System Information tool for your PC.

At first glance, Speccy may seem like an application for system administrators and power users. It certainly is, but Speccy can also help normal users, in everyday computing life.

If you need to add more memory to your system, for example, you can check how many memory slots your computer has and what memory’s already installed. Then you can go out and buy the right type of memory to add on or replace what you’ve already got.

Turn your old router into a WiFi repeater

Our [LifeHacker] suggestion is to install the open-source DD-WRT firmware on your router and turn it into a repeater for your main router, expanding your Wi-Fi signal to reach every nook and cranny of your house, and even into your backyard or garage, if needed. You’ll be able to use the same password and security scheme, you won’t need anything except a power outlet for the repeater when you’re done, and most of your devices will automatically switch between the two signals when needed.

Turn your iPhone into an IR controller

RedEye mini offers the power of RedEye, but in a convenient travel size. Use RedEye mini with your iPhone or iPod touch at home, work, with friends and family, or while on business or pleasure travel to control your TV, stereo, cable box, DVD player, and many other devices that receive standard (infrared) signals. The best part? You can pick up a mini this spring for less than $50.

Looks like the ultimate remote.  Control anything that receives an IR signal.

How to speed up your boot process

To speed up (which is debated if you research this) your boot process just follow these simple steps.

1) Start the System Configuration Utility – Start -> Run -> msconfig

2) Select the Boot.ini tab

3) Press the Advanced Options button

Boot Ini Advanced

4) In the Advanced Dialog: 1)  increase the /numproc to match the processors in your system (depending on where it is in the boot sequence this could refer to both physical and logical processors) and 2) increase the /maxmem (maximum memory you would allow to be used at startup).

Advanced Settings

5) Reboot your system

Post a comment on your results.  My boot process was pretty fast to begin with so any change was hard to notice.

It has a 5-megapixel camera and an LED flash and can shoot both still images and video
