Relocate the menu bar in IE7 to the top of the window

Would you rather have the menu bar in IE7 to be more like IE6 in the sense that it will appear at the very top of the window? A simple reg hack will get that going for you.

1) Copy the bold text below into a text file (between the lines)
-----------------------------------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser\]
"ITBar7Position"=dword:00000001
-----------------------------------------------------------
2) Save the text file with a REG extension (like toolbar.reg)
3) Double click the file and allow it to update your registry
4) Shut down IE7 (if open) and restart it.

  • Except he copied it the wrong way round, as if the menu is normally at the top and this hack makes it at the bottom... doh!

  • Wow, that's great.
Now all I need is a way to get the refresh button back to the left side of the toolbar...

  • Hey all
I have a problem with this reg file. When I double click on it all it does is open the reg file in notebook. What am I doing wrong here? It wont update my IE7 to move the tool bar back down
below....help. I tested it on another system and it worked. What can be the problem on this other system. It's Win XP and fully updated.

  • @bigV: Right-click on the .reg file and select "Merge".

If there's no "Merge" option, click Start, Run, Type "regedit", and press OK. In regedit, click on File, and then Import. Find the .reg file (where you extracted it from the zip), and press OK.

  • you need to change your folder options and deselect "hide extensions for known file types" Afterwards you should see your file listed as myfile.reg.txt remove the .txt and you have a .reg file that can be added to the registry

  • Excellent! Thanks for this. I only use IE for a couple of things, and I hated these being the wrong way round.

  • Umm, But now this made my google toolbar at the wrong place too.

Now the google toolbar is over the adrres bar, what do I do to get it back?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:33 PM EST

  • i like it, thanks!
now if i could only do something with those cut, copy, paste icons shoved over to the right.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:34 PM EST

  • It doesn't work!! I tried to copy the bold text and it just sat there.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:15 PM EST

  • Try downloading the file and execute it and see if that works for you.

By Blogger Veign, at 11:11 AM EST

  • I keep getting the error that the file needs to be binary, and hence it won't add it to my registry. Is there a fix for that?

By Anonymous jearbear, at 12:41 PM EST

  • Did you download the Reg file I provided and try that?

By Blogger Veign, at 5:04 PM EST

  • When I copied the bold text I get the same error message as jearbear. Then I tried saving the pre-made file and it says everyone was completed successfully. When I restart IE7, no changes have been made. NOt sure why. I am also having a problem with the menu bar. For some reason it's checked however nothing is showing. I try to uncheck it and it won't uncheck. I restarted my computer and it still doesn't show the menu bar.

  • I followed the directions and it worked, thanks. But my Google toolbar is now at the wrong place - not at the bottom as it used to be. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks
