- Run floppy-based diagnostic tools from CDROM drives. More and more PCs are shipped without floppy drives these days, and it is such a royal pain when you need to run diagnostic tools on them.

Ultimate Boot CD is classy because it's so easy to setup and use. For rescuing files from a dead or unbootable drive, I've used BartPE at http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
It's great for going in and retrieving files or settings to another drive or computer before tossing the drive.
